Theater Made Short
by Russ Bickerstaff

July 05, 2007

As the show opens, Peter J. Woods comes out in a bathrobe to introduce his evening of short works at the Astor Theater. He smugly affects an egotistical attitude for the stage. As he pontificates, large black letters appear behind him on a glowing, white backdrop. The text heckles him from behind. As with everything else in Woods’ Made In The Mouth, the text is only onstage long enough to fully acknowledge what he’s saying. Then it vanishes.

The first piece, “115 Pieces of Useless Theatre,” is an interesting experiment. César Gamiño stands onstage dressed casually as he folds laundry in front of a ridiculously large pile of linen. Jason Hames walks onstage dressed in a suit. The two then proceed to have an intimate conversation involving some pretty heavy issues. The audience doesn’t get many of the actual words that are spoken. The lights fade in and out for each of the 115 pieces of the conversation that we, the audience, are allowed to hear. We don’t get specifics in the dialogue—only those moments of silence between two people who used to be intimate having the last conversation they’ll ever share. Woods and director John Manno brilliantly capture all those idle moments in a long, deep conversation.

The second piece is considerably more complicated, involving a number of characters. Directed by Tracy Doyle, “More Or Less About Blankets” features David Bohn as Sam, a guy who might have something to say. The press (played here by Ian Clark and Dana Meanz) won’t listen to him, though, preferring to hear the exact same words he speaks out of a charismatic guy in a suit called Name (Tim Chrapko). It’s fun seeing both sides of the character’s personality interact, but just as everything’s getting interesting, the story ends in a simple dramatic equation and fades offstage.

Like the pieces that it consists of, Made In The Mouth will only be around long enough for people to know it’s there. The show, produced in conjunction with local DIY theater outfit Insurgent Theatre, only runs through July 14.

And then Peter comes out in a robe. And then everyone talks! Then a boy talks. Boy talks. Funny boy. And then he makes jokes about how he doesn't smoke at all! And then about glasses!
